There Are No Dead Here

The bloody story of the rise of paramilitaries in Colombia, told through three characters - a fearless activist, a dogged journalist, and a relentless investigator - whose lives intersected in the midst of unspeakable terror.

Colombia's drug-fueled cycle of terror, corruption, and tragedy did not end with Pablo Escobar's death in 1993. Just when Colombians were ready to move past the murderous legacy of the country's cartels, a new, bloody chapter unfolded. In the late 1990s, right-wing paramilitary groups with close ties to the cocaine business carried out a violent expansion campaign, massacring, raping, and torturing thousands.

There Are No Dead Here is the harrowing story of three ordinary Colombians who risked everything to reveal the collusion between the new mafia and much of the country's military and political establishment: Jesús María Valle, a human rights activist who was murdered for exposing a dark secret; Iván Velásquez, a quiet prosecutor who took up Valle's cause and became an unlikely hero; and Ricardo Calderón, a dogged journalist who is still being targeted for his revelations. Their groundbreaking investigations landed a third of the country's Congress in prison and fed new demands for justice and peace that Colombia's leaders could not ignore.

Taking readers from the sweltering Medellín streets where criminal investigators were hunted by assassins, through the countryside where paramilitaries wiped out entire towns, and into the corridors of the presidential palace in Bogotá, There Are No Dead Here is an unforgettable portrait of the valiant men and women who dared to stand up to the tide of greed, rage, and bloodlust that threatened to engulf their country.

I guess some truths are bound to be uncomfortable. This book is riddled with these. The dark right-wing forces unleashed when the colombian state was unable to protect us (me included) from the FARC. Terrible and inexcusable crimes were committed, and this book gives us a detailed list of these. As such, this book is a must. Though, as a colombian living in Colombia I believe that it is also a book with an agenda since it all but ignores the dark left-wing forces that forced some colombians to take action. Again, no crime should be excused by these circumstances, but at least the reader would have been given a more nuanced account of what happened. The tragedy of our nation is that there is such a wealth o killings, massacres, kidnappings and other terrible crimes that you can write a book - even intersting ones - in favor of each side. This is one of them. Probably the best, but still very narrow.

An incredible compilation of information and investigation about the recent brutal history of Colombia. If you have been connected to Colombia, Latin America or issues of human rights and civil wars, this is a must read. Wonderfully done— searing in its exposures and implications. It left me sad, frightened and hopeful about the future, all at the same time. Thank you for this amazing work of detailed research.

It's well written and helps you to connect a lot of dots about Colombian reality. This book deserves to be a nust read for children in school. We must not let this happen again, and Colombian people should know about their own history.

It is a well written book, which compiles many things that were known and many I was not aware of and put together it highlights the monstrosity that Colombia has lived.

Love this book! Fast delivery !

As an expat who has been living in Colombia for 8 years, I found this to be one of the best historical accounts of a situation that is often over looked. The book weaves in and out of characters, accurately exploring a complex political situation through three main characters. Their stories and their sacrifices explores a modern day historical account that will have future implications that are anything but certain. I couldn’t put this down, and found this to be one of the best books I have read in recent years. Highly recommended for anyone hoping to dive into a more recent (and devasting) history of Colombia. Easily 5+ stars.

Fast & honest.

As with any book regarding human rights, this is a hard and painful read. So if you cannot handle descriptions of the numerous assassinations of human rights activists over and over again, then I would suggest you forgo this – although that would be a mistake due to the intrinsic value of this book on so many levels. This book is an almost three-hundred page dissertation on the failure that was, is, and will always be the “war on drugs.”Ms. Sanchez-Moreno and I grew up at the same time, and, even though we were separated by thousands of miles during our formative years, we got to see the colossal failure that was Ronald Reagan's “war on drugs” from different ends – her from the Colombian side (although she grew up in neighboring Peru) and me from the American side. She skillfully details the plights of prominent human rights figures in Columbia who were assassinated due to their daring to speak out about the horrific human rights abuses that occurred almost daily in small Colombian villages, even spreading to Bogota, by the paramilitaries who, it was later discovered, were working hand-in-hand with the military and high government officials. It wouldn't be until years after many activists were murdered or fled Columbia in abject fear for their lives, as well as that of their families, when a few beyond brave prosecutors put the pieces of the puzzle together and figured everything out: The deplorable level of corruption that went all the way to the top of the Colombian government, all of which was fueled by the unreal amounts of money coming from drug lords such as Pablo Escobar and, later on, the people who replaced him when he was killed.Everyday civilians, people who had no part whatsoever in the drug trade – from manufacturing the stuff to using it - were the ones who got caught in the crossfire. And no one seemed to care enough to investigate why massacres and looting were going on in Colombian small towns and villages almost daily, in full view of the military. One thing that will pleasure the reader is the way Ms. Sanchez-Moreno weaves some heavy and detailed information into a readable narrative. Her writing is not convoluted. Instead, it reads smoothly and there's little need to go back and figure out what's going on because she keeps you on track. The only (slightly) negative thing about this book – something far from Ms. Sanchez-Moreno's fault - is that there are many (!) names and places to remember, but she does us the favor by breaking down the people by chapter in the back of the book. The copy I have is an advance reading copy, so I don't know if this was the way the final version of the book was laid out. I certainly hope so because I had to refer to it a few times to keep names and places straight. This is FAR from light, nighttime reading. Ms. Sanchez-Moreno dealt with a heavy, sad subject, one with not many (if any) happy endings. She ends the book with the uncomfortable fact that another paramilitary group popped up in La Granga, Ituango just last year (2017). Hopefully, a lot of people in Columbia will, indeed, find the courage to fend these people off with nowhere near the body count of the 1980s and 1990s.As for me, seeing the failed “war on drugs” from the other side of things made me think of everything I had seen and experienced growing up in one of the most dangerous, drug infested neighborhoods in the U.S. in a different light. I don't minimize my experiences, but I see other people went through tougher times than I did and realize we're in similar struggles together – whether we know it or not.
